A season of harvest is upon us! While we grow a wide variety of tree fruits at Yelland Farm (the site from which we live and work), nothing does quite so well as the apple trees that we have grown. Consequently, we found ourselves in need of a suitable storage solution which, thankfully, we have been able to design and craft this autumn.
Although the initial boxes were an answer to our own personal need for apple boxes, we believe we've designed a beautiful seasonal necessity for country homes and interior enthusiasts. Therefore, as the first product in what we are calling our ‘Country Style Collection’, we're offering our apple boxes to all of you too!
Bespoke, Stackable Apple Boxes
In the design process, we quickly established that our handcrafted apple boxes needed to be both practical and beautiful - something that we are proud to have achieved. In terms of practicality, we have considered the utility of these boxes. From airflow to the apples, to stackable storage design intention, we have taken the time to fully understand what is needed from an apple box (primarily based on our own experience of having apple orchards).
The Chestnut Timber we've used, again, is both a practical and aesthetic choice. Chestnut is known to be strong and durable, but its beautiful grain and natural appearance enhance our apple boxes and gives them a wonderful quality finish. When partnered with a bespoke, engraved touch (perhaps with a person's name or short message), we can see that we've created something truly special to be cherished by all who use them.
The Sign Maker's Tips for Apple Harvest and Storage
- Onsite we grow a vast variety of apples! Everything from Bramley cooking apples to Russets and Jonagolds. Each apple type will have a differing harvest time, so be sure to check when the best time to harvest your apples might be.
- Consider the overall storage conditions of your harvest. While our boxes are designed with storage in mind, you might choose to wrap each apple in a sheet of newspaper or embed them into the boxes filled with straw so that they don't have as much contact with each other. Apples generally keep best when stored in a cool, dry, and relatively humid space (such as a garage or basement). Once they reach the kitchen, the coolest draw is generally their favoured spot.
- Enjoy experimenting with different apple recipes that might act as a good storage solution! Recipes for apple juice and apple cider might help you make a good dent in your harvest so that no apples go to waste.
