The Sign Maker is proud to be a business with an environmental ethos. With acres of outdoors space, we do everything possible to be both sustainable and environmentally conscious. In this blog, we wanted to share a little more about some of the ways that we care for the wildlife on site. From bees and birds to an abundance of wildflowers and trees, we are never short of wildlife at Yelland Farm.
Befriending The Birds
Welcoming the birds to Yelland Farm is always a joy! There is something so special about co-existing with nature in a way that others don’t always get the opportunity to. Onsite, we have a number of bird feeders in addition to a huge variety of trees that we often spot the birds nesting amongst. By actively encouraging the birds in this way, we find that the birds enjoy being here just as much as we enjoy hosting them! The birds appreciate our support all year round. Some may think that they only require attention in the harsh winter conditions, but we know there to be benefits of providing for them in every season. We ensure there is a mix of food to choose from, as well as providing sources of water and shelter too. If you ever visit us here - you can be sure to see the birds exploring the site.
Wildlife Ponds and Wildflower Meadows
Biodiversity is something that we are keen to encourage. We believe that everybody can make a small difference wherever they are and that these small pledges for nature make a bigger difference than we might imagine.
We try to encourage biodiversity in many ways. Onsite at The Sign Maker, we have three established ponds, including our latest ‘dew pond’. Dew ponds have proven themselves to be perfect wildlife hot spots, as well as being an ideal reliable source of water for birds and small mammals too. We also have a plethora of wildflower patches and a significantly sized wildlife meadow that thrives year upon year at Yelland Farms. Bees and Dragonflies are often seen about the site - creating a buzz of excitement wherever they go!
Newest Projects
As a family (and as a business) we are always exploring new wildlife ventures. The team here constantly observe the wildlife and explore inventive ways of better providing for the creatures we have visiting us. For example, our latest project has involved installing a number of swallow cups. Swallows have used Yelland Farm as a base for generations, however, this year a cheeky pair have decided to nest in our paint room of all places! With the realisation that there is a demand for nesting sites for swallows specifically, Kate quickly went out to purchase a large number of swallow cups, ensuring that next year's swallows have a place to stop and rest here should they choose to. Our other major wildlife project is the adaptation of one of our barns. We are transforming the top of the barn into a bat roof - using specific materials for the bats to cling to as well as installing bat vents for easy access in and out. Though this project is still in progress, we anticipate it to be very successful.
It is a privilege to ensure that our site is wildlife-friendly. We also like to encourage our clients and customers to create mini wildlife havens wherever they are. In our online shop, we stock a range of bird-feeders, gardening tools and environmentally crafted signage made here on site. We’d love to encourage you to take a look around the shop and begin your own pledge for nature!
Let us know what you get up to, tag us in any pictures or wildlife ventures on social media, and join us in caring for the wildlife.
