When looking for a wooden shield, it's important to ensure you choose one of the highest quality. At The Sign Maker, we use premium timber and our skilled carpenters guarantee a beautifully finished product. This blog provides further insight into why our shields are an excellent choice.
Premium Timber Selection
At The Sign Maker, unlike many suppliers, we use solid oak rather than wood veneer. Our oak shields are available in either a 19mm thickness or can be joined by our expert carpenters to create a 24mm thickness. We use a CNC machine to precisely cut the shield shapes, after which our carpenters carefully router the edges and sand the shields to create a smooth, superior finish. The shields are then passed on to our treatment team, where they can be finished with a variety of treatments to suit your preferred style. Two popular options are an Antique Oak stain with varnish for a traditional Mahogany appearance, or Satin Varnish, which gives a smooth golden finish. Other treatment options include custom paint in any colour, black preservative, or oil finishes. Additionally, we craft shields from various other types of timber, such as Iroko or Sapele, to suit different preferences.
Custom Shapes
One of the key benefits of choosing a wooden award shield from The Sign Maker is the ability to create unique shapes. While we offer a range of standard shapes, all our shields are crafted onsite in our North Devon workshop. If you have a bespoke shape in mind, simply provide us with the image or artwork, and we’ll bring it to life.
Variety of Plaques
In addition to crafting shields from scratch, we can also customise them with virtually any type of plaque you desire. Whether your shields are intended for taxidermy purposes or as award trophies, we have plaques to suit every need. Furthermore, we offer laser engraving directly onto the wooden shield, a feature that has grown in popularity in recent years.
Here are some plaque options that look fantastic on shields:
- Brass: A classic material that exudes quality, especially when regularly polished, offering a refined and timeless look.
- Anodised Aluminium: This distinctive material still provides a high-quality finish. Available in various colours such as black, red, green, and blue, the wording is laser-etched, resulting in a striking silver or white contrast.
- Acrylic Laminate: A popular choice available in a wide range of colours, including black, brass effect, stainless steel effect, and even bright shades like pink. Laser etching reveals a contrasting colour underneath, typically black or white.
